Area Choir

2022 Director of Music: Susan Cancio-Bello

Pianist:  Alexander Stewart

Organist: Beverly Caldon

The Area Choir, an area tradition since 1953, is a non-denominational, non-auditioned choir — typically 60 -70 members — that performs three concerts of sacred Christmas music the first weekend in December.  The choir’s selections are drawn from a variety of music genre, interspersed with time for the audience to join with choir and organ in singing traditional Christmas carols.

Seven weekly rehearsals are held on Sunday evenings, from mid-October through the end of November, with a dress rehearsal on the Friday evening of concert weekend.  The 2022 rehearsals are Sundays from 6 to 8:00 PM beginning October 16, with a dress rehearsal on December 2 and concerts on December 3 and 4. Proof of up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination is required to sing this year and singers will rehearse masked.  Rehearsals and concerts are held in the beautiful setting of South Congregational Church in Newport, New Hampshire.

There are no fees to belong to the choir. The Area Choir is supported through business and individual donations, and a free-will offering at each concert.

Members come from many area towns and cities, and audience attendance is just as far-reaching.

The Area Choir gives adults and teens who love singing the opportunity to join their voices in an uplifting and joyous musical gift from the choir to the community.
