Upper Valley Voices

Director: Kevin Quigley
Accompanist: Alison Cerutti

Founded in 1978, Upper Valley Voices (formerly Thetford Chamber Singers) is an SATB choir with members from across the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont. We love exploring challenging music from a wide range of genres and eras. We rehearse on Tuesday nights and genuinely enjoy each other’s company.

Our repertoire spans many languages and cultures—from Renaissance works to contemporary music—including newly commissioned pieces written specifically for us. We are an inclusive and friendly ensemble, dedicated to presenting high-quality choral performances throughout the region.

Mission
We are a community chorus committed to the musical, cultural, and spiritual enrichment of our singers and audiences through the performance of a wide variety of sacred and secular music.

Core Values

  • We see the Arts as an important form of communication, celebrate diversity in thematic programming, and challenge ourselves and our audiences to be thoughtful and passionate about issues which affect our world community.
  • We encourage amateur singers to develop strong musical skills and vocal techniques, and to gain an understanding of diverse musical periods and styles.  We draw our vocal soloists from our membership.
  • We engender a vibrant artistic community through collaboration with writers, dancers, visual artists and instrumentalists, and the performance and commissioning of new works.
  • We are dedicated to keeping the Arts affordable, both for our singers and for our audiences, while also adequately supporting the musicians and artists who perform with us.
  • We develop and nurture a broader audience for choral music, especially among youth and in the outlying communities.
  • We support each other, both musically and emotionally, and instill a sense of mutual responsibility for our growth as musicians.

Joining: We prefer to begin by inviting you to a concert so you can meet the Director and current singers. If it feels like a potential fit, you’ll then be invited to attend a couple of rehearsals.

Our singers represent a wide range of experience—from those newer to choral singing to seasoned and professional vocalists. While the skill levels vary, this is not a beginner ensemble. About a third of our members read music and have formal musical training, and a few sing professionally. Another third are strong, experienced choral singers. The remaining third are committed amateurs who are willing to put in additional work outside rehearsal to keep up. We often provide part recordings to help everyone come prepared.

We rehearse in Norwich on Tuesday evenings and perform throughout the Upper Valley, typically in early December and early May. Rehearsals are fun, light-hearted, and musically focused. Our director emphasizes heart-centered singing and gives space for each piece to deepen as we live with it over the season. He is intentional about ensuring singers leave rehearsal feeling good about the work we’re doing and the art we are creating together. His programs always carry a larger purpose—offering something meaningful for both audiences and singers, especially in light of what may be happening in the wider world from season to season.
